ARMAGH
LIONS CLUB
Armagh
Lions Club came into being as part of Lions International just three years
ago. We began with twenty-two charter members. Since then we have lost
a few and gained a few with membership now standing at eighteen. So you
see not only are we new but we are also small.
Could you make a commitment of an hour on the second and fourth Mondays
in the month from September to June and join us in our endeavours. We
meet in the Armagh City Hotel at 9.00 PM
Yes meetings really do last just one hour. How long you stay in the bar
afterwards is entirely up to yourself.
We would be delighted to welcome you and you can speak to any Member or
contact the Secretary on wmdawson@gmail.com
Since
our formation we have undertaken a wide range of fundraising activities
including, a BBQ and Auction in 20003, a golf ball race in conjunction
with BBC's Children in Need, a Gala Ball at which we presented a fully
adapted mini-bus to the Station Road Resource Centre.
We have inaugurated in 2005 an annual Clay Pigeon Shoot and in 2006 a
Classic Car Rally.
In addition we have done (very successfully) the Christmas Food Appeal
working with St Vincent de Paul and the British Legion and have helped
North Armagh Motorcycle and Car Club with marshalling at their events.
Recently we presented a cheque for £15,000 to Marie Curie Cancer
Care, the result of our fundraising in 2005/6.
Fundraising in 2006/7 was directed towards providing much needed play
equipment for Lisanally Special School. We provided lighting and stage
curtains to help them with their drama productions and outdoor equipment
such as climbing frames, swings, specialist bicycles, etc, which are so
important in physically developing each pupil as well as increasing a
sense of confidence and independence. Such facilities also afford additional
opportunities to encourage communication, turn-taking, sharing and interacting
with others.
The playground was completed with the help of the Further Education &
Library Board and opened in September 2007.
2007/8 saw us involved in the purchase of a new ambulance for St. John
in Armagh and the vehicle was presented to the St. John Ambulance at our
Charter Dinner in October 2007.
Our focus charities for 2008/9 are with other Lions Charities, the N.I.
Children's Hospice and The Oakland's Trust in Armagh who provide respite
care for children with severe learning difficulties.
In all over our first five years we have raised just over £150,000
for local charities and good causes.
